Introduction : This essay has been written by William C. Douglas. He was a judgeofthe Supreme CourtofAmerica. He visited India in 1950. He wasakeenand minute observer. On his way to Ranikhet he saw the plains and jungles, villages
and their mud houses. He visited India after the partition. He saw thechildren of refugees. Here he writes abouta refugee girl of nine.

His journey

His journey: The writer ofthis essay was going to Ranikhet. He was travelling by a slow moving train. It stopped at all the way stations. At every station he alighted and walked the platform. He saw all sorts of people. Mostly they were poor. He tried to talkto them. He wanted to know about their social lifeand means of earning. He saw the Ganga, the widespread forests and the villagers..

Met the refugee children

Met the refugee children : At one station a group of refugee children sur- rounded him at the platform. They were selling hand-woven reed baskets. Many
persons in India could not buy their baskets due topoverty. The childrenexpected that the rich American would buy their things. So they surrounded the writer. He bought some baskets and a few fans.

one of them was a beautiful girl of nine. She was very pushing. She had a lovely basket witha handle. She wanted to sell it forarupeeand a half. There were tears in her eyes. He felt pity for her. But he was not desirous to purchase the basket.

Feeling of self respect

Feeling of self respect : The author did not need the basket, so he put a handful of change in her basket. But thegirl was displeased.With all the pride and
graciousness ofagrown uplady, she returned the money tohim. The writer under- stood the feeling of self respect of the girl and he bought her basket. The girl ran home happily. It was a remarkable experience for him. .

His feelings

His feelings : The writer saw pride andasense of self respect everywhere in India. They loved and gave importance to their independence. The girl was a fine example of this feeling
