Introduction to the poem
Introduction to the poem: In this poem the poet advises his countrymen to know the meaning of true happiness. They should live in an atmosphere free from fear where they feel themselves proud and dignified. Everybody should be free in getting knowledge and using his reasoning power. Society should not be divided into small sections on the narrow basis of religion, caste and language. They should be true to everyone.
कयिता का परिचय-प्रस्तुत कविता में कवि अपने देशवासियों को सलाह देता है कि वे सच्ची प्रसन्नता का अर्थ समझें। उन्हें भयमुक्त वातावरण में रहना चाहिए जहाँ वे स्वयं को गौरवान्वित और
सम्मानित अनुभव करें। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को ज्ञान प्राप्त करने में और तर्क शक्ति का प्रयोग करने में स्वतन्त्र होना चाहिए। उन्हें सबके प्रति सच्चा होना चाहिए। समाज, धर्म, जाति और भाषा के संकीर्ण आधार पर छोटे-छोटे वर्गों में विभाजित नहीं होना चाहिए।

Q. Explain with reference to the context of the following stanzas:
- Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Word meanings : knowledge (नॉलेज) = शिक्षा, world (वल्ड) = समाज, broken up (बोकन अप) = विभाजित, fragments (फ्रैगमेन्ट्स) = वर्गों या टुकड़ों, narrow (नरो) = सकीर्ण, domestic walls (डॉमेस्टिक वॉल्स) = जाति, धर्म, रंग व भाषा की दीवारे, depth (‘डेप्थ)-गहराई, tireless (टायरलेस) = थकानरहित, striving (स्ट्राइविंग) = प्रयत्न, stretches (स्ट्रचेज) = फलाव,
perfection (परफैक्शन) = पूर्णता।

Context: The poet prays to God that He must make this nation prosperous by development in every field of life.
Explanation: The poet wishes that the people of this country should be free. They should not feel any kind of fear at their hearts. They should lead a life of self respect and honour. Everyone must be free from any bondage of religion, caste and language in getting knowledge. The society of his country should not be di- vided in small groups of caste, religion and language. All the people must be the follower of truth. They must be making their efforts so hard to get the human
perfection or they should try hard to cultivate the qualities of humanity. They should be striving constantly for getting perfection in every field of life.
व्याख्या-कवि इच्छा करता है कि उसके देश के लोग स्वतन्त्र होने चाहिए। उन्हें अपने दिल में किसी प्रकार के भय का अनुभव नहीं करना चाहिए। उनकी गति निडर होनी चाहिए। उन्हें आत्म-सम्मान और स्वाभिमान का जीवन व्यतीत करना चाहिए। प्रत्येक को धर्म, जाति और भाषा के बन्धन से शाम प्राप्त करने में स्वतन्त्र होना चाहिए। उसके देश का समाज धर्म, जाति और भाषा के छोटे-छोटे वर्गों में विभाजित नहीं होना चाहिए। सभी लोगों को सत्य का अनुसरण करने वाला और अथक प्रयास करने वाला होना चाहिए ताकि वे मानवीय पूर्णता प्राप्त कर सकें या उन्हें मानवीय गुणों को पैदा करने का प्रयास करना चाहिए। उन्हें जीवन के प्रत्येक क्षेत्र में पूर्णता प्राप्त करने का अथक प्रयास करना चाहिए।
- Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening
thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
Word meanings : clear (क्लीअर) = स्पष्ट, stream(स्ट्रीम) – झरना, reason(रीजन)- तर्क शक्ति. dreary (ड्रीअरी) = अन्धकारपूर्ण. desert(‘जैजट) = निर्जन स्थान या रेगिस्तान, sand (सैन्ड) = बालू. dead habit (डैड हैबिट) = पुराने रीति-रिवाज जो अब व्यर्थ हो गये है, ever widening (ऐवर वाइडनिंग) = निरन्तर प्रगतिशील,
फ्रीडम) = स्वतन्त्रता का स्वर्ग, my Father (माई फादर) = हे ईश्वर! awake (अवेक) = जगाना या सचेत करना।

Context: In these lines the poet very clearly depicts the picture of his country. The poet wishes to have his country progressive and free.
Explanation: The poet prays to God that his countrymen should be the fol- lowers of truth. They should not be the slave to the old customs. They should follow new thoughts. The countrymen should always try to find the truth. The poet compares reason with the stream of clear water. Old habits and customs are com- pared the dry desert of sand. The thoughts and actions of our countryinen should be progressive.
व्याख्या–कवि ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करता है कि उसके देशवासी सत्य का अनुसरण करने वाले हों। वे पुराने व्यर्थ हो चुके रीति-रिवाजों के दास न हों। वे नवीन विचारों के अनुयायी बनें। देशवासी सदैव सत्य की खोज करने का प्रयास करें। कवि तर्क शक्ति की तुलना स्वच्छ झरने के पानी से करता है। पुराने रीति-रिवाजों की तुलना रेगिस्तान की बालू से की गई है। हमारे देशवासियों के विचार और कार्य प्रगतिशील होने चाहिए।
Central Idea of the Poem
The Central idea of the poem My Heaven’ by Rabindra Nath Tagore is the desire for ideal perfection in the mother land. The poet wants real and spiritual freedom. He wants his countrymen to be fearless, self respecting and free from the difference of race and religion. They should be true to everyone. They should be progressive in thought and action.
