Introduction to the poem
Introduction to the poem: This poem is taken from Shakespeare’s play ‘The Merchant of Venice! It is a speech by Portia on mercy. Antonio borrowed money from Shylock and signed a bond with the condition that if he fails to pay the money back within three months, Shylock would be permitted to cut a pound of flesh just near Antonio’s heart. By chance, Antonio fails to pay the debt in due time. Shylock goes to the court and files a suit against Antonio. Shylock asked the Duke to let him act accordingly. Portia, the wife of Bassanio, appears in the court. She is disguised Doctor of Law. She appeals Shylock to be merciful towards Antonio.

कविता का परिचय-प्रस्तुत कविता शेक्सपीयर के नाटक ‘The Merchant of Venice’ से अवतरित है। यह दया के ऊपर पोशिया द्वारा दिया गया भाषण है। एन्टोनिया ने शायलाक से धन उधार लिया और एक बॉण्ड पर हस्ताक्षर इस शर्त पर किए कि अगर वह लिया गया धन तीन माह के भीतर
वापस नहीं करेगा तो शायलॉक उसके दिल के पास से एक पाउण्ड माँस काटने का अधिकारी होगा। भाग्य से, एन्टोनियो धन वापस करने में असमर्थ रहता है। शायलॉक एन्टोनियो के विरुद्ध मुकदमा दर्ज कराने अदालत जाता है। उसने ड्यूक से नियमानुसार कार्यवाही करने के लिए कहा। बैसेनियो की पत्नी पोर्शिया अदालत में उपस्थित होती है। वह डॉक्टर ऑफ लॉ के बदले वेश में है। वह शायलॉक से एन्टोनियो के प्रति दयालु होने के लिए अपील करती है।

Q. Explain with reference to the context of the following stanzas:
- The quality of mercy is not strain’d;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes,
‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest;
Word meanings : quality (क्वालिटी) = गुण, mercy (मी) = दया, strained (स्ट्रेन्ड) – दबाव दिया हुआ, droppeth (पिथ) = गिरती है. gentle rain(जेन्टल रेन) = धीमी वर्षा, heaven (हेवन) = आकाश, beneath (विनीथ) = नीचे, भूमि पर, twice (ट्वाइस) = दोहरा blest (ब्लेस्ट) बरवान, blesseth (ब्लेसेथ) = कृपा करता है. mightiest (माइटिएस्ट) = सबसे शक्तिशाली।

Context
Context: In these lines the heroine of the play, Portia appeals to the villain Shylock to show mercy to Antonio, Shylock does not agree with Portia. Portia praises much about the quality of being merciful.
Explanation
Explanation: According to Portia, Inercy is a noble virtue of human heart. I cannot be shown under pressure. It comes out of heart as naturally as the gentle rain falls from the sky upon the earth. Nobody can force it down. Mercy brings happiness to both the giver and receiver. The man who receives mercy is fortunate. God is pleased with the man who shows mercy, Mercy is the most powerful quality of a person who is a giver. He benefits the man who receives mercy.
Note: In these lines we can see a beautiful example of Simile.
व्याख्या-पोर्शिया के मतानुसार दयालुता मानव हृदय का योग्यतम सद्गुण है। बयालुता दबाव में प्रदर्शित नहीं की जा सकती। यह हवय में से स्वाभाविक रूप से उसी प्रकार निकलती है जिस प्रकार आकाश से पृथ्वी पर वर्षा होती है। इसके लिए कोई दबाव नहीं अल सकता। दयालुता विखलाने व प्राप्त
करने वाले दोनों को प्रसन्नता देती है। जिस पर दयालुता दिखलाई जाती है वह भाग्यशाली होता है। ईश्वर दयालुता दिखलाने वाले व्यक्ति से प्रसन्न होता है। दयालुता बिखलाने वाले व्यक्ति की अतिशक्तिशाली ताकत है और प्राप्त करने वाला व्यक्ति भी लाभान्वित हो जाता है।

Word meanings : becomes (बिकम्स) = शोभा देती है. throned-monarch (थोन्ड मोनार्क) -राजा, crown (क्राउन) = राजमुकुट, sceptre(सेप्टर) = राजदण्ड, temporal (टैम्पोरल) = सांसारिक, attribute (ऐट्रीब्यूट) = गुण, awe (आँ) = भय, majesty (मजेस्टी) = महान शक्ति, dread (ड्रेड) = भय।

Explanation : Portia says that powerful persons, like kings, have great author- ity, But mercy is their strongest quality. The king sitting on his throne has a crown on his head. The crown gives greatness to the king. But mercy makes him greater. The king who has mercy is loved and respected most. He has a rod in his hand which shows that he has great authority on earth. When we look at the rod we are afraid of him. Mercy is real power relating to morality and spirit both.
व्याख्या-पोर्शिया कहती है कि राजा जैसे ताकतवर लोग बहुत अधिकार रखते है। किन्तु दयालुता उनका सबसे अधिक शक्तिशाली गुण होता है। राजगद्दी पर बैठा राजा अपने सिर पर मुकुट धारण किये रहता है। मुकुट राजा को महानता प्रदान करता है। लेकिन दयालुता उसे और अधिक महान बनाता है। जिस राजा में दयालता होती है वह सभी का प्रिय और आदरणीय होता है। उसके हाथ में एक राजदण्ड होता है, जो यह प्रदर्शित करता है कि पृथ्वी पर उसे बहुत अधिकार प्राप्त है। जब हम उसके हाथ में राजदण्ड देखते है तो उससे भय खाते हैं। दयालुता नैतिकता और आत्मा दोनों से सम्बन्धित वास्तविक शक्ति होती है।
- But mercy is above this sceptred sway.
It is enthroned in the hearts of the kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God’s
When mercy seasons justice.
Word meanings: is above (इज एबव) = बढ़कर है. sceptered sway(सेप्टई स्वे) शक्ति तथा अधिकार का शासन, enthroned (एन्धोन्ड) – उच्च स्थान प्राप्त, doth a doesa करता है, likest (लाइकेस्ट) = अधिक समानता वाला, seasons (सीजन्स) = मिला दी जाती है।

Context: Portia says that the sceptre shows the power of the kings. But mercy a greater than the earthly power of the kings.

Explanation : Portia says that the sceptre in the hand of the king shows his mighty power. It shows his geatest power on earth. But mercy is greater than this power. The sceptre is in the hand of the king bul mercy is in his heart. It is a natural quality of God himself. When a king softens his justice with mercy his power ap- pears very much like the power of God.

Central Idea of the Poem
The poet says that mercy is a noble virtue of human heart. It is a divine gift to mankind. It cannot be forced. It flows like gentle rain on earth. It is a double blessing to both of them. He is blessed who shows mercy and he who receives it. It suits kings better than their crowns. When a person giving justice softens it with mercy, his power is seen like the power of God.

हिन्दी अनुवाद-कवि कहता है कि दयालुता हृदय का योग्यतम सदगुण है। यह मानवता पर ईश्वरीय वरदान है। यह पृथ्वी पर धीमी-धीमी वर्षा के समान है। यह दोनों को दुहरा लाभ देने वाली है। जो दयालुता दिखलाता है वह तथा जिस पर दयालुता प्रदर्शित की जाती है दोनों पर ईश्वर की कृपा होती है। यह राजाओ को मुकुट से अधिक सुशोभित करती है। जब एक व्यक्ति दयालुतापूर्ण न्याय करता है तो उसकी शक्ति ईश्वर की शक्ति के समान हो जाती है।
