Q. Explain with reference to the context of the following passages:

Q 1.Certain psychologists tell us that we forget things because we wish to forget them, and it may be that it is because of their antipathy topills and potions; that many people fail to remember them at the appointed hours. This does notexplain however, howit is thata life long devotee of medicines like myself is as foregetful ofthem as who take them most unwillingly

Reference: These lines have been taken from the lesson “Forgetting” written by Robert Lynd.

Context

Context : In these lines the writer tells that we generally forget the things because we wish to forget them.

Explanation

Explanation: According to the writer therearesome people, whoareexpert in psychology, forget things generally. It is because they usually hate those things and do not try to remember them. For example, they forget to take medicines as they do not like them. They do not take pills and potions according to the time advised by the doctors. The writer explains that the medicines are useful to him. Therefore, he must take them regularly. But he fails to remember to take them.

Q 2. The commonest form of forgetfulness, I suppose, occurs in the matters of posting letters. So common is it that I am always reluctant to trust adeparting visitortopostan importantletter. Solittle dolrelyon his memory that Iput himon his oath before handing the letter to him…

Reference

Reference : These lines have been taken from the lesson ‘Forgetting’ written by Robert Lynd.

Context

Context : According to the writer memory works less than usual in some matters. The writer himself is forgetful of posting the letters and taking his
medicine regularly.

Explanation

Explanation : The writer says that forgetting of posting letters is thecommon- est. The writer does not want toavisitoraletter topost, though he has to cross the pillar-box on his way. He does not rely that the visitor could remember to post the letter. He puts him on his oath first and then gives him the letter which he would post. The writer himself is under the habit of forgetfulness. That is why he cannot rely on others.

Q 3. Fewofus, however, have lost much property on our travels through forget- fulness. The ordinary man arrives at his destination with all his bags and trunks safe. The list of articles lost in trains during the year suggests that it is the young rather than theadult who forget things, and that sportsmen have worse memories than their ordinary serious minded fellows

Reference

Reference : These lines have been taken from the lesson ‘Forgetting’ written by Robert Lynd.

Context

Context: According to Robert Lynd we loose our property on our travels due to forgetfulness. The young forget their things rather than the adults.

Explanation

Explanation : Some people forget their things in trains and buses. Young boys are very much forgetting persons rather than the adults. In the same way players are also in the same category.Ordinary persons are not seen forgetting theirprop- erties. They return with their bags and other things from their journey.

Q 4. They are abstracted from the world outside them. Memories prevent them from remembering to do such small prosaic things as take the ball or the bat with them when they leave the train. For the rest of the day, they are citizens of dream land.

Context

Context: The list of articles lost in trains during the year suggests that it is the young rather than the adult who forget things. Sportsmen have worse memories than their ordinary serious minded fellows.

Explanation

Explanation : When they remember their heroic deeds, they are inamood of high exaltation. They are isolated from the outside world. Their memories prevent them from rememberingthe things like ball or bat. They easily forget these things in the train. They spend restoftheir day indaydreaming. They cannot remember
uninteresting things.

Q 5. How many men below the rankofaphilosopher would be capable of such absentmindedness as this? Most of us, I fear, are born with prosaically efficient memories. If it were not so, the institution of the family could not survive in any great modern city.

Reference

reference : These lines have been taken from the lesson ‘Forgetting’ written by Robert Lynd.

Context

Context: In these lines the writer gives an example ofa certain father who took his baby inaprant. He left the baby out of a beer shop and set down for a glass of beer. He forgot the baby and reached home before lunch..

Explanation

Explanation : The writer is wonder struck at the forgetfulness of that certain father who forgot all about his baby he had taken with him in a pram. Such an act may bepossible in the case of philosophers. According to the writer few people
who are not philosophers are capable of such forgetfulness. He is surprised to say that most people have such good memories as make life dull. If people were not capable of having good memory the family system could not exist in a grand modem town.
