Introduction: This essay has been written by C.E.M. Joad. He is a prominent writer and pholosopher. He has written a great lot on human civilization. This
essay has been extracted from his famous book “The Story of Civilization. This lesson is dialogue form. Lucy, a little girl, and the writer are talking. Through a
series of questions and answers the writer explains the meaning of civilization.
Lucy’s idea about civilization
Lucy’s idea about civilization: Lucy thinks that living a rich and comfortable vilized. Being civilized means having things we are proud of. The Caliphs and Princes in the book ‘Arabian Nights’ had palaces, jewels, fine clothes
and slaves to serve them. They were civilized. Shakespeare was civilized because he wrote a number of plays.
Joad’s idea about civilization
Joad’s idea about civilization : Machines are related to civilization but only machines do not make us civilized. We must do something special to be proud of. Only then we can be called civilized. Raphael’s pictures and Beethoven’s music are sign of civilization.
Main features of civilization
Main features of civilization: (a) Creating beautiful things of which we do not get tired, (b) making inventions, (c) making new things and, (d) thinking freely are
the main features that make up civilization,
Conclusion
Conclusion: Therefore, being civilized means making beautiful things, thinking
freely, thinking new things and keeping the rules. All this means art. Seitce and political justice and ethics.
