Q. Read the following passages and answer the questions given below:

(1) Well, then, let us say that using money and power just to get what you want and do what you like, although it may be very nice for a time, isn’t being civilized. In other words, civilization is not just being splendid and grand and living in luxury. And since most of the world who have been rich and powerful have used their money and power in this way, they weren’t civilized.

Questions:

  1. What is the character of thinks obtained by money and power, according to the author?
  2. Can we become civilized by using money and power ? If not, why?
  3. Why do you think leading a rich life and living will make us civilized ?
  4. How do you know that civilization has been eluding us for long? Give reasons for answer.

Answers

  1. Things obtained by money and power are used in uncivilzed manner.
  2. We cannot become civilized by using money and power. Because these things have always been misused.
  3. We think that the things we need can be obtained by money and power, this notion is not always correct.
  4. We have been using money and power in bad sense. Therefore civilization has been eluding us for long.

(2) There are a lot of things which are necessary before a person gets the chance. For instance, he must have security, nobody can think about this afraid of being robbed or murdered at any moment. Also he must have leisure to think in, and he won’t have that if he has to give all his attention to getting food to eat and clothes to wear, if, that is to say, he spends all his time carning his living.
And he must have other people to talk to. So that you may say that security, leisure and society, which are all necessary to free thinking, are necessary also to
civilization.

  4. In this condition he will have no chance of free thinking. And, he will not be able to develop civilization.

    and ethics. Now these things may not be all civilization is, but anyway they will do to go on with
