He wrote two books. One book was ‘The Discovery of India. The present piece is extracted from that book. He tries to show that there is unity in india. The variety can be seen even on the surface. !
Diversity According to the writer there is great diversity in India. We see it in physical appearance and in habits and traits of the inhabitants of India. The people living in different parts of the country are different. In the North-West is the Pathan and in far South is the Tamil. They belong to different races. They are different in
race, figure, food, dress, social customs and languages..
Ancient culture
Ancient culture : In ancient times the inhabitants of these parts and also of Afganistan and other parts of central Asia were largely Buddhists. These areas were
the main centre of Indian culture. The ruins of the great university of Taxila and.” other buildings prove this idea. The people were converted to another religion but
their mental background did not change. All the people of various sets of the country retained their peculiar characteristics. They remained Indian. They seem
different only outwardly. Nothing could harm this unity.

Distinctiveness of India: Unity in variety is the chief distinctiveness of Indians. There are people who follow religions which came from outside such as Muslims
or christians. They are considered Indians wherever they go. Even in Muslim country a Muslim from India is considered an Indian.
